Some CDN$40M of cocaine was found by Canadian authorities in cartons of Guyana pepper sauce and a businessman was to appear in an Ontario court yesterday charged with importing and conspiracy to traffic in the illegal substance

The cocaine was seized by Canadian police following months of investigation which saw them tracking the shipment from New Brunswick and letting the accused, identified as 45-year-old Mahendrapaul Doodnauth of Sequin Court in Etobicoke, take possession of it with only a small amount of the cocaine still in the packaging.

Guyana drug boss faces 15 years on coke rap in NYC

NEW YORK (AP) — A South American businessman said to have led a violent paramilitary organization in Guyana is likely to spend the next 15 years in a U.S. prison.
Shaheed "Roger" Khan pleaded guilty Monday to cocaine trafficking, weapons charges and witness tampering as part of a deal with federal prosecutors in Brooklyn.
Federal authorities said Khan imported major amounts of cocaine into the U.S. while leading an armed group that has been accused in as many as 200 killings in Guyana. He was arrested in Suriname and deported to the U.S. in 2006 to face drug charges.
While he was awaiting trial, Khan and one of his New York lawyers were charged with conspiring to silence witnesses in the case.
Prosecutors said federal agents secretly recorded the attorney, Robert Simels, speaking to one of Khan's associates about using bribes or violence to keep people quiet about his crimes.
"Any witness you can eliminate is a good thing," Simels said, according to prosecutors.
Simels, a seasoned defense attorney whose clients have included "Goodfellas" mobster Henry Hill, is charged with witness tampering and obstruction of justice. His attorney, Gerald Shargel, said Tuesday that Khan's guilty plea will have no effect on the case.
He said a trial will prove that Simels' conduct was "nothing more than a lawful effort to vigorously defend his client."
Khan's attorney did not immediately return a phone call Tuesday.
The plea bargain calls for Khan to serve 15 years in prison in exchange for resolving the drug trafficking charges, the witness tampering case, and a federal weapons charge dating from when Khan lived in Vermont in the 1990s.
The plea bargain doesn't involve any of the alleged slayings in Guyana.
Khan became one of Guyana's richest businessmen after moving there in 1993. He controlled businesses that ranged from housing developments and discos to carpet cleaning.

Following the JFK drug bust hitting the headlines of the world media, the reputation of Guyana, is even further defiled. That's the opinion of the People's National Congress /Reform. According to the party, "The name of our country has once again been defiled, as Guyana is being cast as a major transshipment and production centre in the international narcotics trade."
At its weekly news briefing yesterday, the PNC/R said the matter has long reached crisis proportions and further stated, "Who can doubt that on a regular basis, planes and ships that leave these shores carry more than their authorized list of cargo."
Noting that Guyana is now the target of intense scrutiny by the drug enforcement agencies in Europe and North America, PNC/R stated that the government seems to be treating the matter very causally - as if they are unaware that the narcotics trade could ruin the country's social fabric and damage our international relations.
The party went further to say that the PNC/R has also taken note of reports that suggest that high officials are facilitating this state of affairs and called on the government to demonstrate its clean hands and its seriousness by addressing the matter urgently and fiercely.
"Any action less than this will only serve to strengthen the impression that elements in the government have formed unholy alliances with drug lords," the PNC/R asserted.
The PNC/R's drug link remarks conjured up memories of an article in a 1988 edition of National Geographic describing Guyana as part of a "cocaine empire."

Guyanese rapist in Belfast gets 18 years
The Guyanese man who admitted raping a woman and attacking two others within 48 hours in Belfast, Northern Ireland has been sentenced to 18 years in prison.
A BBC report said that Ryan Subryan, 25, was sentenced yesterday in the Belfast Crown Court by Justice Hart who said that the evidence suggested that the young man remains a serious danger to women. In imposing the sentence the judge also recommended that the defendant be deported back to Guyana upon his release from custody since he was in that country illegally.
Subryan, who allegedly committed a similar offence in Guyana back in 2005 and was placed on $75,000 bail before absconding, committed the attacks in June of 2007.

Ryan Subryan an illegal immigrant originally from Guyana, has admitted raping one woman and attacking two others in Belfast within the space of 48-hours in 2007.

The 25-year-old, described in Belfast Crown Court as a sexual predator, admitted a total of seven offences.

The father of two was was living at Dunmurry Lane in south Belfast.

Mia Rahaman - Cocaine Smuggler

Mia Rahaman has pleaded guilty to the charge of importing a controlled substance and sentenced to two years house arrest.
The former local beauty queen admitted to the crime on February 18 2005 in a Canadian federal court, her passport and travel documents were seized by officials, according to reports out of Canada. She is not allowed to travel and was ordered to do over 200 hours of community service as well as seek employment.
The court also ordered Rahaman, to first seek permission from the authorities before leaving home.
On May 21, 2003 when Mia Rahaman was detained at the Toronto's Pearson International Airport with 7.5 kilogrammes of cocaine, the drugs were in the false bottom and sides of her suitcase and smaller amounts in jars of cosmetics.
Canadian Customs had placed the street value of the drug at cdn$1 million. At age 22, Rahaman was crowned Miss Guyana 2002 and went on to represent Guyana at the Miss Universe pageant in Puerto Rico. According to media reports, the sentence outraged the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) who wanted her sent to prison. Rahaman, the report pointed out, managed to obtain adjournments that dragged out her court proceedings for almost two years.
Immigration officials said they'll try to revoke Rahaman's landed immigrant status in Canada. She can be deported to Guyana and not allowed to return due to the conviction.
